About IFE

OVERVIEW


Founded in 1918, the IFE is a non profit making professional body with a rapidly growing membership of over 12,000 and a global reach that extends through 39 international branches. Licensed by the Engineering Council (UK), the IFE upholds professional standards within all public and private fire sectors by offering assessment of knowledge, experience and development and engages with major stakeholders to offer international conferences, identify and promote good practice and enhance technical networks worldwide.

The Institution provides professional recognition for members across a broad spectrum and has achieved recognition from a number of professional bodies. Under its ECUK licence, the Institution is authorised to register suitably qualified members as Chartered Engineers (CEng), Incorporated Engineers (IEng) and Engineering Technicians (Eng Tech).

OBJECTIVE

To encourage and improve the science and practice of Fire Extinction, Fire Prevention and Fire Engineering and all operations and expedients connected therewith, and to give an impulse to ideas likely to be useful in connection with or in relation to such science and practice to the members of the Institution and to the community at large.

ORGANISATION

BOARD OF DIRECTORS

The Board of Directors is the governing body of the Institution of Fire Engineers. Directors are Trustees for the Charity. The Board comprises 12 Directors who look after the interests of members and of the profession. The Board meets four times a year. GENERAL ASSEMBLY

The General Assembly comprises a representative from each of the Institution's constituted Branches. The General Assembly meets twice a year normally in January and at the time of the AGM. THE MEMORANDUM AND ARTICLES OF ASSOCIATION

The Memorandum and Articles of Association and Byelaws are a statement of the Institution's objectives and laws. The document contains the rules that regulate the governance and management of the Institution through the Board of Directors. It is important that all members have an up-to-date copy of this document, and are aware of their rights and obligations.

The document also governs the formation and operation of the Institution's Branches and Groups. The Institution is a Company limited by guarantee and holds charitable status.
