Assessing Knowledge & Understanding Consultation Meeting 19th August 2008
The IFE welcomes representatives from 26 UK FRSsOn 19 August, 26 UK Fire and Rescue Services sent representatives to the Institution's Head Office in Moreton-in-Marsh to discuss a timed, written paper approach to assessing knowledge. The day started with a warm welcome by Mr John Judd QFSM FIFireE, Chairman of the Institution's Board of Directors, who emphasised the whole-hearted backing of the IFE Board in supporting this important development.
Eur Ing Dr Jim Marsden CEng FIFireE outlined current examination structures and an important revision to mandatory papers. Whilst Fire Engineering Science would remain as an essential requirement, and a further 3 papers would still be required to complete the Diploma in Fire Studies (Watch Manager level), a syllabus review would ensure that additional papers were developed to provide pathways to achievement, whilst maintaining the professional standards of the Institution.
Acting CEO Louise Craig provided a summary of the IFE's approach to consultation and emphasised the wish to work in partnership with CFOA, the FRSVSG and the FSC with whom initial discussions had taken place and are ongoing. Two breakout sessions were held: one to consider syllabus review and the other to discuss what options may be available through collective endeavour to provide a Learning Zone of study resources to support the process.
The Institution would like to thank all involved for making the meeting such a success.
Exams Seminar 19th June 2008
We are delighted to announce that the IFE Exams Seminar held at Washington Hall on 19 June attracted over 90 delegates spanning 44 UK Fire and Rescue Services. Such was the level of interest expressed in the projects undertaken this year in Manchester, Merseyside, Northern Ireland and Buckinghamshire that the Institution had to limit the number of places available for the event. The feedback received has been consistently positive and we look forward to working with partner Fire and Rescue Services to deliver examinations for the modern Fire Service, driven by the needs of the Fire Service and for the benefit of the professionals working within it.
If you were unable to attend the event and are interested in being involved, please contact Louise Craig, Acting Chief Executive Officer at louise.craig@ife.org.uk or call 01608 812580. To view the presentations delivered on 19 June, please click the links below:
