IFE Member Appointed State Director for the International Association of Hazardous Materials Technicians

Jonathan L. Pennington, BS, MBA, CFPS, CFO, MIFireE, RPIH,CSP has been appointed to the position of State Director for the International Association of Hazardous Materials Technicians.

Jonathan Pennington is the Vice President of Special Operations and a Senior Safety Engineer for MEA and has been involved in the emergency response and occupational safety & health profession for fourteen years. Jonathan has been in the fire service since 1992. Mr. Pennington has been professionally employed as a Shift Commander for a municipal response organization and as a Deputy Fire Brigade Leader in charge of training for a fortune 100 company. He has spent many years leading, managing, training and consulting industrial and municipal response teams in the art and science of fire/damage control, incident management, hazardous materials mitigation, and permit required confined space rescue techniques.

Jon has worked in several sectors of the health and safety profession including working as an Emergency Medical Technician - Basic (EMT-B) pre-hospital healthcare professional for a county based emergency medical service (EMS), several years as a certified fire protection specialist (CFPS) for a national fire protection firm, a risk assessor for the insurance industry, a safety & security officer for one of the largest hospitals in the Commonwealth of Kentucky and managed his own consulting firm before joining MEA's world class staff.

Jonathan has trained in many aspects of hazardous materials response, and has specialized in chemical, ordinance, biological, and radiological issues. Mr. Pennington has trained at the Nuclear Test Site located in Mercury, Nevada, and at the live agent C.O.B.RA. Training Center located at the U.S. Department of Domestic Defense's Anniston, Alabama facility. Jon has also studied the effects of radiological/nuclear releases through the Emergency Management Institute, Emmitsburg, Maryland and the National Fire Academy, Emmitsburg, Maryland. Jonathan is a Registered Professional Industrial Hygienist (RPIH) and enjoys teaching toxicology and air sampling protocols to industrial and municipal hazardous material response teams.

Jonathan holds earned degrees in Fire/Rescue Science, Occupational Safety and Health, Safety Engineering and an M.B.A. majoring in Public Administration. Mr. Pennington also holds the international designation of Chief Fire Officer (CFO) conferred by the Commission on Chief Fire Officer Designation and has been designated Member Grade by the Institution of Fire Engineers (MFireE). Jon also has earned the Board of Certified Safety Professionals' Certified Safety Professional (CSP) designation.
