Issue 2
April 2007
Welcome to the second issue of the IFE newsletter.
The first IFE newsletter went out in late January and we had an excellent response to it. It is very much intended to be a newsletter for the membership with content supplied by the membership, so get your "pen" out and send your contribution to Helen.
The Institution's Board of Directors met shortly after the publication of the last newsletter, see my report for further detail and as this newsletter hits your inbox, we shall be meeting again. The agenda is full and there is good progress being made with a number of projects. We shall also be receiving a report from the General Assembly members who met in Adelaide in March. The GA will be meeting again in Cambridge UK in July and I look forward to discussing the Institution's long term planning to support the development of the fire engineering profession. If individual members have any thoughts on the subject of the development of the fire engineering profession, I would be pleased to receive them at john.judd1@ntlworld.com.
Meanwhile, enjoy the newsletter and encourage other members to register by using the forward facility at the bottom of the newsletter.
Please let us know what you think of this newsletter by contacting Helen Griffiths (e-mail: helen.griffiths@ife.org.uk)
John Judd QFSM BA FIFireE
Chairman of the Board of Directors

TSAG has been a relatively recent development for the Institution, having been in existence since late 2005.
The intention with the creation of TSAG was to revive and extend the activities of the IFE's Technical committee from which the initial membership of TSAG was drawn. TSAG reports to the Technical Portfolio holder on the IFE Board and, like other IFE committees, operates a succession plan to ensure that the membership of TSAG is renewed to keep pace with changes in the Institution.

Let's discuss the future of fire investigation and research. 20th February 2007.
This seminar organised jointly by the Institution of Fire Engineers and the Building Research Establishment was well attended by a wide range of fire investigation practitioners, from the fire and rescue service, police services as well as forensic and research interests. Notably there was no representation from the insurance industry or the strategic decision makers in the fire and rescue service, although DCLG was represented.
In a packed programme, the speakers prompted debate about the future of fire investigation, which ranged across the role of professional bodies, training and accreditation, application to major incidents and the means by which the lessons were learned and, importantly, acted upon.

Four International Fire Service Training Association (IFSTA) publications from the past year received awards in the 2006 Society of Technical Communication Southwest Region Publications Award Competition in the USA.
They are as follows:
Award of Excellence
- Industrial Exterior and Structural Fire Brigades (1st Ed.): Jeff Fortney, Cindy Brakhage, and the FPP Graphics Team
- Fire Detection and Suppression Systems (3rd Ed.): Lynne Murnane, Tom Ruane, and the FPP Graphics Team
Award of Merit
- Fire and Emergency Services Instructor (7th Ed.): Fred Stowell, Barbara Adams, and the FPP Graphics Team
- Interactive Study Guide for Pumping Apparatus Driver/Operator Handbook (2nd Ed.): Beth Ann Fulgenzi, Melissa Noakes, and Carl Goodson
Participation in this competition allows IFSTA to benchmark how its products stand up against technical publications that are being developed in a broad variety of disciplines and markets. As evidenced by these awards, IFSTA continues to show that its publications are outstanding and at least comparable, if not better, than those being developed in any field.

The Institution of Fire Engineers in conjunction with Bodycote Warrington Fire Research are delighted to announce a prize of £1000 for the best fire safety engineering paper. The best paper will be selected by an expert panel selected from the fire engineering community.
The closing date for entries will be the 30th May 2007 and the winner will be invited to receive the award at the AGM in Cambridge. In addition to the prize money an additional trophy will be presented by the IFE.
