Members Update May 2011

IFE Members' Update
IFE opens 41st branch
THE INSTITUTION is proud to announce the opening of its 41st branch. IFE's International President, John Woodcock, inaugurated the latest branch, IFE Nederland, last month, with around 100 participants attending the event in the Dutch city of Groningen. The opening was hosted by Hanze University of Applied Sciences, and congratulations are extended to Marcel Lasker, Branch President of IFE Nederland, and all IFE colleagues in the Netherlands for this superb achievement. Contact details for all branches can be found at www.ife.org.uk/branches
2010 finances and report
For the third successive year, the Institution is pleased to report a healthy financial position and a modest surplus. Members will shortly receive a copy of the full 2010 Annual Report, containing the abbreviated accounts for the Institution, together with membership figures and key achievements, which include the following:
- Peer review training sessions for Engineering Council registration have been held in Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand and the UK.
- Examinations have been extended to a third day to accommodate the large number of UK fire and rescue service personnel undertaking Level 3 Certificate exams. More than 5,200 question papers were distributed to 116 exam centres worldwide in 2010.
- The Institution takes a keen interest in promoting the importance of protecting the environment, and members will no doubt recall that the 2010 International Conference, held in London, was themed around sustainability. Following this, a Fire and Sustainability workshop was run in partnership with BRE in October 2010, and the forthcoming 2011 conference (Cardiff, 6-7 July) is themed Green Fire Engineering to Protect the Built Environment.
- There has been a notable increase in the number of applicants from UK fire and rescue services seeking third-party registration with the IFE's Register of Fire Risk Auditors. The register of Fire Risk Assessors has also increased, and such is the demand that additional volunteers have been receiving training and mentoring to ensure future capacity to carry out an increasing number of application reviews.
- The ambassadorial role of International President is important for the Institution, and last year proved to be particularly active. Between January and July 2010, in his role as International President, Bill Stewart made numerous visits in Canada, as well as travelling to Germany and the UK. In July 2010, John Woodcock took up the presidential role and made visits to Chicago, Edinburgh, Dublin, Hong Kong, New Zealand and Australia, as well as the UK. He also provided guidance to colleagues in the Netherlands to assist them in establishing the new IFE Nederland branch.
- The Institution's Charitable Educational Fund continues to assist extremely worthwhile projects. Last year, the Institution financially supported work undertaken with the Ghana National Fire Service to deliver free tuition and study materials to operational fire and rescue personnel in Ghana, and also financially supported a Kosovo/Albania Humanitarian Aid Convoy in partnership with Rotary International.
