Synopsis

Brief Synopsis

A firefighter (Ff) died in Salford Royal Hospital due to head injuries resulting from a fall from a fire engine on the 1st March 1951 at Cross Lane/Eccles New Road, Salford. The firefighter died on the 3rd March (House & Settle et al, 2017).

It is understood from Unknown author, 1951 that the Ff fell from the appliance en-route to a fire. The Ff suffered from fatal head injuries when a handrail that on later inspection, was found to be fixed to a ‘rotten’ wooden base. It was stated at the subsequent coroner’s inquest that the rot was due to the constant penetration of water where the handrail was secured to the base by screws. It was also stated that the defect would not have been apparent upon preliminary examination. Another Ff also fell and needed to be hospitalised with facial injuries (Unknown author, 1951).
