Brief Synopsis
A recruit firefighter (Ff) died due to the injuries sustained following a fall during a hook ladder drill after stepping onto an asbestos roof. The Ff was on his eighth and final week of an initial training course run by Leeds Fire Brigade (House & Settle, 2016).
An accidental verdict of death was recorded by the Leeds coroner. The Ff died from ‘shock following a brain injury caused by falling 30 ft during a ladder drill at Gipton Fire Station, Leeds’. It was also said that while pitching ladders the Ff had stepped of a parapet and onto an asbestos roof and fell through it (Unknown author, 1956).
