Synopsis

Brief Synopsis

A Leading Firefighter (LFf) collapsed and died during the third day of firefighting operations on a Pakistani registered ship named SS Yousuf Baksh which was beached at Sandwich Bay, Deal to avoid sinking after a fire of board (House & Settle, 2016 and Unknown Author, Unknown Date).

The ship had been travelling from Karachi to Boulogne and was ablaze from ‘bow to stern’ off Sandwich Castle in Sandwich Bay approximately 300 yards off Deal. ‘For the first time an RAF helicopter was used to put the initial wave of firemen on-board the freighter’. They were then supported by more equipment and personnel via a motorboat and later 2 salvage tugs. All crew except the Master, Chief Officer and Chief Engineer had abandoned the vessel ‘in the face of a Southerly gale’. The deck was said to be ‘red hot underfoot’ (Pearce & Masters, Circa 1998).

The fire was fought in relays over a period of 3½ days before it was bought under control. The fire had started in ‘No. 2 hold and spread to the other 5’. During the fire a Retained Duty System (RDS) Leading Firefighter (LFf) collapsed on-board the vessel. A lifeboat was launched with a Doctor on board but the LFf was pronounced dead on arrival at hospital (Pearce & Masters, Circa 1998).

It is not currently known what the exact mechanism of injury/medical condition was, e.g. heart attack or other cause.
