Synopsis

Brief Synopsis

The Glasgow Fire Service (GFS) were called to a fire within a flat at Cumberland Place, Glasgow. A severe fire was underway in which one occupant (the mother) had jumped from a first-floor window. 4 children, who’s ages ranged ‘from 6 months to 5 years old’, died in the fire. While attempting to extinguish the fire a Station Officer (StnO) aged 47, collapsed within the premises due to a heart attack and died later in hospital (SFRS, 2016 and Unknown author, 1967).

2 other firefighters (Ff) were overcome by smoke at the incident and taken to hospital also. It is currently understood/suspected that the fire was caused by a paraffin heater. The mother had made ‘several vain bids’ to reach the children and then jumped from the first-floor window. ‘Neighbours and workmen also tried to reach the screaming children but were driven back by the intense fire’ (SFRS, 2016 and Unknown author, 1967).
