Synopsis

Brief synopsis

On the 25th February 1974, a firefighter (Ff) and a Sub Officer (SubO) were injured during a fire and subsequent explosion involving molten metal at The British Steel Corporation steelworks at Shepcote Lane, Sheffield. The Ff died from his burn injuries on the 10th March 1974 and the SubO also badly burnt, died on the 28th February 1974 (House & Settle et al, 2017).

The initial incident was quickly dealt with, but without warning there was a massive explosion, injuring 11 Ffs and two British Steel workers. Both the Ff and SubO were trying to cool an over-heating furnace when it blew up. The blast had been so severe it was heard more than half a mile away and was described as sounding ‘just like a bomb’ (Unknown author, unknown date and Unknown Author, 1974).
