Interim Registration for CEng

Why become an Interim Registrant for Chartered Engineer?

If you have attained a qualification that is accepted for Chartered Engineer registration but have yet to gain sufficient experience in the workplace to meet all of the UK-SPEC standards, then interim registration is an important step for you. Once you have built up sufficient experience (5 years is indicative) then your application for full Chartered Engineer status will be streamlined.

Interim Registrants for Chartered Engineer benefit from:

  • online CPD tracking
  • local and international CPD events
  • IFE journal, newsletters and online access to archived publications

How to apply

If you live outside the UK, we encourage you to contact your local branch (if available) first, especially if you prefer to pay in local currency. One of the following:

  • An accredited bachelors degree with honours in engineering together with an accredited or approved masters degree or approved further learning to masters level.
  • An accredited MEng degree

Check to see if your degrees are accredited by the Engineering Council here. 


  • Two Chartered Engineer referees. With effect from 1 January 2019 these are no longer required.

Payments and subscriptions

If your application is successful, annual subscriptions are payable. Payment can be made using direct debit, credit/debit card, sterling cheque or bankers draft.  All other ways to pay are listed here.
