Over the course of the day attendees will have the opportunity to hear from three speakers with a focus on heritage and historic buildings. Presenters Andrew Nicholson, Steve Emery, and Tony Burridge will be presenting on How to develop a Fire Strategy for a Heritage Building, Extinction Alert - The nuts and bolts of Historic Doors, and Tha National Trust - Fire Risk Management respectively.

About the Speakers

Andrew Nicholson

As the founder and Managing Director of The Fire Surgery, Andy Nicholson applies his 25+ years of experience and knowledge as a chartered fire engineer to solve fire safety challenges for various building types and uses. He leads an independent fire engineering design consultancy based in London that specializes in unusual and alternative engineering solutions for projects ranging from private residential to significant mixed-use developments. Andy has a passion for innovation and creative design and has been involved in developing fire strategies for some of the most high-profile buildings in the UK, such as the Cutty Sark, the Olympic Stadium, the Millennium Dome, and the Royal Albert Hall. He has a special interest and expertise in public and cultural buildings, especially heritage buildings and theatres, and has worked on the Grand Egyptian Museum in Cairo, the British Museum Great Court, and the Sam Wanamaker Theatre. He is a committee member of the IFE Heritage Fire Safety Group, a principal author of BS 9999. He was a contributing author of BS 7974-PD 5 fire fighter safety and also authored section 13 of CIBSE Guide E firefighting. He is the recipient of best fire strategy of the year in 2015, 2016 and 2021 from the SFPE.

Steve Emery
Steve Emery established Heritage Fire Consultancy Limited in 2022, following his retirement from Oxford University. His interest in heritage buildings began during his service as an operational firefighter and fire officer for the City of Bath, a world heritage site designated for its outstanding 18th century architecture. Steve quickly became an expert in his field and joined English Heritage in 2001 as their National Fire Adviser, and in 2016 Oxford University in a similar role. Steve has influenced fire policy and best practice at a national and international level and led research and testing, making a positive difference to the strategies used to protect historic buildings. He’s worked on some of England’s most important buildings, including The Palace of Westminster and St Paul’s Cathedral. A companion member of the Institute of Fire Engineers, Steve chairs their special interest group for heritage buildings.

Tony Burridge
Tony Burridge is an Operational risk Business Partner for Fire Wales and Northern Ireland. Tony will be presenting on how the National Trust manage Fire Safety across their property portfolio which spans across residential, commercial and historic properties, Tony will be looking at the complexities of managing fire safety across a diverse range of properties.
