London branch: Wildfire in Northern Europe?

From our London branch

Join us for this free webinar event from our London team. Speaker Mari de Las Nieves Fernandez Anez PHD will present on the growing threat of wildfires in Northern Europe.

Wildfires in Nordic countries have historically been scarce and of limited dimensions, so research has also been limited. However, in the last years an increase on the unmanaging of the forests, a decrease on the activities developed in rural areas, and the changes occurred due to climate change have increased the number and size of these events. It is expected that these numbers will continue to increase, and to try to prevent them and decrease their consequences, a full understanding of the conditions expected to encounter.

To this end, a determination of the flammability of the Nordic vegetation, conditions of the wildland urban interface and an understanding of the characteristics that are faced is basic to prepare for the future.

About the speaker

Dr. Nieves Fernandez Anez
is an associate professor within fire safety in campus Haugesund. Her main research lines are wildfires, smouldering fires and dust explosions, focusing on biomass and new fuels. She finished her PhD on Flammability of Biomass at Universidad Politecnica de Madrid in 2016, where she also obtained my MSc in Environmental Risk (2012) and MEng in Mining Engineering (2011). She lead a project funded by the Norwegian Research Council entitled “Prediction of ignition and spread of Scandinavian vegetation: from experiments to models”, working on prevention of wildfires in Scandinavian vegetation. Additionally, she is part of different research project and networks, such as NERO COST action, and Nordic Fire and Safety Energy Network.
