Please introduce yourself, describe your role or position within your current workplace and what a typical working day looks like.
I’m an assistant building surveyor at Rider Levett Bucknall supporting the Fire Advisory Solutions team to help clients identify, manage and remediate risks associated with fire across their estates. Day to day activities involve undertaking fire door and compartmentation surveys, assisting on FRAEW inspections and monitoring passive fire remedial works.
What motivated you to pursue an IFE qualification, and why did you choose the IFE over other pathways?
I pursued an IFE qualification to develop a strong, recognised foundation in fire safety that complemented my role within the Fire Advisory Solutions team. As a building surveyor working on compartmentation surveys and passive fire remediation, I wanted to ensure my knowledge was underpinned by an industry leading professional body.
I chose the IFE because it is widely regarded as the benchmark for fire safety competence and is highly respected across the fire engineering and built environment sectors. Unlike broader construction or surveying pathways, the IFE offers qualifications that are directly focused on fire safety principles, legislation and practical application. This alignment with my professional responsibilities made it the most relevant and credible route to support my development and career progression within fire safety
Have you taken an IFE online exam? Can you share your experience and the benefits of this format
I undertook the Level 3 Passive Fire Protection online examination which was well structured and user friendly. Preparation for the exam using ASFP’s online modules made the content digestible for someone with a limited background in fire safety.
The online format also made the qualification more accessible alongside full‑time work, as it removed the need for travel and minimised disruption to my working week.
Overall, the experience was efficient, well managed and demonstrated that the IFE’s online exams maintain the same professional standards as traditional in‑person assessments.
How did the IFE qualification help deepen your understanding of fire engineering or strengthen your professional confidence?
The IFE qualification significantly deepened my knowledge of passive fire protection, compartmentation and the role these measures play in overall building fire safety. The structured modules helped me link theoretical knowledge, such as fire behaviour, testing standards and regulatory requirements, with the practical work I undertake day to day.
Completing the qualification has also strengthened my professional confidence. It has given me assurance when discussing fire safety issues with colleagues, clients and contractors, and when identifying non-compliance's or advising on appropriate remedial actions. Knowing that my understanding is underpinned by a respected professional qualification has enabled me to contribute more effectively within the Fire Advisory Solutions team.
How has the IFE qualification helped your career?
It has enhanced my professional profile and confidence when engaging with colleagues, clients and contractors. It demonstrates a clear commitment to fire safety competence and continuous professional development, which is increasingly important within the built environment. Overall, the qualification has helped position me for continued progression within fire safety.
What advice would you give to someone considering taking an IFE exam (in-person or online) for the first time?
My advice would be to familiarise yourself with the modules and exam format as early as possible and allow sufficient time to undertake the online revision. Using recognised learning resources, such as ASFP’s training materials, can really help break down complex topics and build confidence, particularly if you are new to fire safety or coming from a related discipline.
I would also recommend linking the learning content to real-world scenarios wherever possible, as this helps reinforce understanding and makes the material more memorable. For online exams, it is important to ensure you are comfortable with the exam platform in advance and have a suitable, quiet environment on the day.
