Jennifer Campbell MIFireE

Please introduce yourself and tell us about your career journey to date.

My name is Jennifer Campbell, I started my career in government in 1997 as a Temp Transcriptionist with the City of Fort Myers, City Clerk’s Office and then progressed to a full-time position. I stayed there for approximately four years, until a position as a Staff Assistant came available with the Fire Prevention Bureau with the City of Fort Myers. I interviewed and transferred in 2001 and from there I took every opportunity I had to educate myself and gain promotion within the department. Whilst there I obtained my bachelor's degree in Fire Science, along with many other fire certifications. I left the city as the Fire Marshal and then moved onto my position with Fort Myers Beach Fire Control District in 2019, where I am still today in the position of Fire Official.

What inspired you to pursue a career in fire engineering?

I find this field very interesting, and while many things are black and white, some have a grey area that give you the opportunity to work with individuals on how to best achieve compliance with a fire code.

What do you find most rewarding about working in this field?

Being able to help the community and make a positive impact.

What professional achievement are you most proud of, and why?

Obtaining my degree and firefighter certification. I did this shortly after being promoted to Fire Marshal, while having two elementary age kids, and working full time.

How has being part of the IFE supported your development or career progression?

In my opinion, being a part of the IFE shows that I have met certain professional benchmarks and am recognised for the hard work that I have accomplished.

Do you have any advice for women thinking of starting a career in fire?

Take the plunge and do it! If you find your passion, pursue it, and don’t stop. There will be challenges along the way, but stay focused, keep learning and trust that your skills and dedication will speak for themselves.
