Blog: A spotlight on professional development

Professional development has always been a priority for the IFE, and it plays a vital role in the field of fire engineering. Ongoing skills and learning are important to support career progression, enhance the sector, and ensure public safety. In such a rapidly advancing sector, staying up to date with best practice, emerging technologies, and regulatory change is essential. It can be accomplished through a variety of ways, including taking formal exams and qualifications, focusing and engaging with continuous professional development (CPD), attending industry events and networking within the profession. Altogether, these activities help ensure that fire professionals remain competent, confident, and prepared for the tasks of modern fire safety.

A focus on CPD

CPD is a great way to enhance professional development and stay current with the latest knowledge and needs in the fire safety sector. IFE offers a range of CPD resources via our members’ CPD Hub on a diverse array of topics. Our events webpage is kept updated, providing our members with valuable opportunities to network with professionals, stay on top of the latest sector developments, and continue learning throughout their career at upcoming IFE events worldwide.

Our Special Interest Groups meet regularly to examine topics in depth and contribute their expertise, resulting in events or resources that help members deepen their knowledge in these fields. Our networking groups further facilitate professional development with the Women’s Networking Group and our Early Careers Networking Group both offering ways to enhance networks, expand horizons and develop interests.

This month the IFE Early Careers Networking Group celebrates its anniversary of the webinar series ‘Elevate.’ This series provides free CPD and aims to address the skills gap in the sector supporting early career professionals into the field. Organisations can also lean on this resource to strengthen internal training programmes while equipping employees with the knowledge and confidence to progress in their careers.

Now in its second year, Elevate continues to provide CPD on topics including timber frame building design, ethics in the industry and fire safety in healthcare settings. Covering a range of topics led by subject experts is key to building a robust and extensive knowledge base for fire professionals to draw on.

Professional development through accessible exams

Professional qualifications play a vital role in supporting development across the fire safety sector. By validating knowledge, strengthening competencies, and setting consistent standards of practice, exams ensure that professionals remain equipped to meet evolving industry demands. They provide a structured pathway for individuals to demonstrate their expertise, enhance their credibility, and progress confidently in their careers.

Over the past two years, the IFE has strengthened its qualifications offering with the introduction of digital exams to provide candidates around the world with a more accessible exam route. The latest digital exams to be added includes the new IFE Fire Risk Assessment qualification suite. Announced earlier this month, these exams have been developed alongside the British Standard 8674 to support the framework for the assessment of Fire Risk Assessor competency. By expanding learning and development opportunities, the IFE is contributing to enhanced fire safety, a more inclusive workforce and standing by our commitment to reinforce EEDI (Equality, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion).

Showcase experience and expertise

The IFE is proud of its resources to support members’ professional development, contributing to growth as individuals and as fire professionals. As an individual’s learning and skills advance through acquiring new competencies, broadening technical knowledge, and sustained engagement in CPD, it is possible for their progression to exceed the level at which they originally joined.

The IFE encourages members to undertake regular reviews of their membership to ensure it remains an accurate reflection of their professional standing. Upgrading membership is one of the clearest ways to show continual growth throughout a career. It demonstrates experience, expertise, and commitment to excellence, giving greater recognition within the fire safety community and beyond. In some cases, it can open new opportunities within IFE volunteering, such as the ability to join panels like the Membership Application Assessment Panel where volunteers assess applications and contribute to the maintenance of public trust and confidence in the fire safety profession.

The IFE provides a clear progression pathway through its membership offering and our grades are benchmarked against rigorous, transparent criteria, ensuring that every upgrade reflects genuine professional achievement and competence.

If it’s been a while since you reviewed your membership, it’s worth asking the following questions. Have I gained new qualifications or skills? Am I contributing more to the profession? Does my grade reflect my status?

Take the next step in your professional journey - discover the membership that best matches your achievements and ambitions.
