94th AGM & International Conference 2017

“LEARNING LESSONS, SHARING KNOWLEDGE, SAVING LIVES, REDUCING LOSSES”

The IFE International President Elect, Martin Shipp, and the IFE Head Office Team are pleased to announce that Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue Service have kindly agreed to support our  two day, 94th AGM and 2017 International Conference which will take place at the Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue Service Training Centre, Cassidy Close, Manchester, M4 5HU, UK on Tuesday 11th and Wednesday 12th July 2017.

The GMFRS Training Centre has excellent meeting room facilities with a large demonstration area to help support our conference programme and parallel workshops (http://manchesterfire.gov.uk/contact_us/training_centre.aspx).

The conference structure outlined (below) describes the way in which we will address the “learning lessons, sharing knowledge, saving lives, reducing losses” theme.

The aim of the conference is to look at global problems and global solutions, to seek to identify the causes of fire losses in our member countries, to see how these causes differ between countries, to seek solutions and to identify research needs.

So, our conference this year will bring together experts from a diverse background of knowledge, so that we can share their experience and learning from past and present events and for us to be able to discuss together our future direction.

As well as presentations on global themes by guest speakers there will be parallel, structured workshops on the problems facing the fire community in our various countries, providing an opportunity for all of us to exchange and share the knowledge and understanding that comes from being fully engaged in our international family.  It is intended that the global themes will include education, research, competency, regulation, quality in construction and emerging energy technologies, as well as firefighter safety and technical rescue.

Conference Prices are as follows:

  • AGM Attendance for IFE members only - Free of Charge
  • IFE member/partner delegate 2 day conference package - £165.00 + VAT

We are thrilled that the 2017 International President’s dinner will be held in the stunning venue of Manchester Cathedral.  Because of the extensive refurbishment carried out both inside and outside the church during the nineteenth century, many people can be forgiven for thinking that, from appearances at least, Manchester Cathedral is a relatively modern church. In fact evidence of an early Saxon church in Manchester comes from the Angel Stone, which was discovered embedded in the wall of the original South Porch of the Cathedral in the 19th century, and which has been dated to around 700. It was around the year 1075 that King William the Conqueror gave all the land between the River Ribble and the River Mersey to Roger de Poitou, son of the Earl of Shrewsbury. He in turn gave the Manor of Manchester to the Greslet, or Gresley family. In 1086 Manchester was recorded in William the Conqueror’s Domesday Book, which mentioned that the place had a Parish Church and it is believed that this church was located at the corner of St Mary’s Gate and Exchange Street. However, this site was deserted when in 1215 Robert Greslet, Lord of the Manor and 5th Baron of Manchester decided to build the current church adjacent to his manor house (now Chetham’s Library). This became the Parish Church of Manchester.

  • Hear from Anthony O’Connor the Director of Fundraising & Development at the Cathedral on the history of this magnificent structure;
  • Experience the ambience of this historic venue;
  • Enjoy a four course fine dining experience with wines to complement;
  • Finish the evening off with a review from our newly inaugurated International President, Martin Shipp BSc (Physics) CEng FIFireE CPhys MIns
