Technician Grade

Applicants for Technician grade of membership will:

  • Hold the IFE's Intermediate exam

or

  • Be a registered Engineering Technician with the Engineering Council UK or an international equivalent

or

  • Hold the UK Statutory Sub Officers examination .

or

  • Hold a qualification approved for this purpose. Click here for more information.

Applicants will also have met the relevant Initial Professional Development (IPD) criteria in:

  • Knowledge and understanding of engineering technology.
  • Contribution to the design, development, manufacture, construction, commissioning, operation and maintenance of products, equipment, processes, systems and services.
  • The acceptance and exercise of personal responsibility, use of effective communication and interpersonal skills and to have made a personal commitment to adhere to the code of professional conduct.

Details on these criteria, and the information to be submitted in the form of an IPD (Professional Review) Report with an application for Technician grade, can be found in the IPD fact sheets located in Annexes A, B and E in the document Membership Rules for Titles and Grades and are also attached to the application form.

Mature Candidate Route

Fire engineers without the formal academic qualifications necessary for the grade of Technician may submit an application via the Mature Candidate Route. Applicants will be required to demonstrate 12 years of increasing responsibility in fire engineering and, by submitting a technical paper, that they have achieved a standard of competence comparable to contemporaries who have achieved the Technician grade by academic achievement.
