IFE installs new International President during centenary celebrations

The IFE is pleased to introduce its new International President, Richard Fowler MSc BEng (Hons) CMgr MCMI CFIFireE 2018-19.

Immediately following the AGM, Richard opened the IFE’s International Conference alongside Alasdair Hay, Chief Officer of Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, which focussed on our centenary theme of ‘Young people and fire; reducing risks and saving lives’. The IFE was delighted to host Dame Judith Hackitt who provided an update on the Independent Review of Building Regulations and Fire Safety, as well as a range of expert speakers from around the globe on subjects including fires in nightclubs; school fires and the importance of sprinklers; wildfires; and fire safety strategy in healthcare facilities. Delegates also benefitted from insightful updates from LABC, the NFPA and the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government.

Richard commented: “Our calibre of speakers was second to none delivering a wide range of interesting topics. Thank you to each and every one of them for contributing to the programme and ensuring a successful event.

“Special thanks must also be expressed to the main conference and Centenary Dinner sponsor UL and all of our exhibitors and supporters: FSEC, Supply+, NFPA, CrisisSim, UCLan, Plumis, Godiva, 3M, LABC, XACT, Bureau Veritas, Coopers Fire and WL Gore and Associates (UL) Ltd.”

As part of the IFE’s 100th anniversary celebrations, a Centenary Dinner was hosted on the evening of 31st October at the National Museum of Scotland. This event took place on the exact date that our founding fathers formed the Institution 100 years ago.

“It was an honour to begin my presidential year hosting the Centenary Dinner in very fitting surroundings for such a historic occasion”, said Richard.

“The dinner culminated the past year of centenary celebrations which has seen several branch events take place across the world celebrating the IFE’s theme. The centenary torch took pride of place on the museum’s stage for its last stop on its global torch relay. Thank you to all of our branches for taking part in this campaign to raise awareness of the IFE’s anniversary year.”

Richard has been involved with the IFE for many years standing as a member of the International General Assembly (IGA) for the past 12 years. He is the branch secretary for the South Eastern branch of the IFE in the UK and has previously held the role of branch president. Richard brings his experience to the Board of Directors of the IFE as a Trustee of which he has been the Vice Chairman for the past year and continues this role into 2019. He is heavily involved in the education portfolio and works closely with the Education Team at Head Office.

Turning to the year ahead Richard said: “I have the honour of being the Institution’s International President as we enter the next 100 years of the Institution. My theme for the year ahead will focus very much on competency and ethics and will conclude with the 96th International Conference held in Brighton on 17-18th July 2019.”
